Robert James Decker was born June 5, 1938 in rural Farmersburg. His parents were Harold James and Mildred Jane (Fish) Decker. When he was quite young, his family moved to the rural Forest Mills area of Allamakee County, where he attended school. Following his schooling he worked for a number of neighboring farmers.

December 3, 1961 Robert married Sharon Steiber at the EUB church in Lansing. They moved to Cedar Rapids, where he worked for the City. After a couple of years they moved back to Monona and Robert started a career in truck driving that spanned nearly 40 years. He drove for several local firms, including Gary Bulman, Kurk Trucking, Caledonia Haulers and Jerry Sommer, as well as a number of other regional carriers. Following his retirement in 2000, he worked as a security guard at Cabela's in Prairie du Chien, WI, and rode with his son Steve, who is also a truck driver.

Robert enjoyed music and liked to go dancing. He also played a little guitar. As an avid outdoorsman, he appreciated days spent fishing on the Mississippi River or squirrel hunting in the northeast Iowa hills. Robert was also a self-made mechanic and worked on the family car, as well as stock cars he used to drive at some area tracks. In recent years he has loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Sharon of Waukon; six children, Sarah (Patrick, Sr.) Egan of Monona, Nadine (Rick) Miller of Postville, and Nancy (Tom) Haberichter, Susan (Ronald) Troendle, Steve (Paula) Decker, and Bobbie Jo (Dave) Cowell, all of Waukon; 17 grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn (Wesley) Winters of Waukon; and a brother, Gary (Bernice) Decker of Lawler. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Shawn Haberichter.

Serving as casketbearers are his grandchildren, Dustin, Patrick, Jr., Matthew, Megan and Lance Egan, Jarod, Stephanie and Jonathan Haberichter, Nickolas and Theodore Troendle, Michael and Benjamin Miller, Zachery, Sonya and Ethan Decker, and Nicole and Daniel Cowell.
