Evangeline Teslow

Evangeline Teslow, 97, of Waukon died Friday, March 23, 2007 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were held Monday, March 26 at Salem United Church of Christ in rural Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery in rural Waukon.

Evangeline Stock Grotegut Teslow was born February 22, 1910 on the Ludlow Township, rural Waukon farm of her parents, Charles and Mary (Ehde) Stock. She was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, attended Ludlow #5 rural school and graduated from Waukon High School in 1928. Following school she worked for several years as a hired girl for neighboring families.

March 5, 1931 she married Walter Grotegut at her parents' home. They farmed together on Walter's home farm in Winneshiek County. Following Walter's death in March of 1965, Evangeline sold the farm and moved to Waukon, where she worked at the S&D Cafe for many years and also as a Home Health Aide.

August 1, 1970 she married Lester Teslow at Salem United Church of Christ. They enjoyed several bus trips together as well as a flight to New York for a grandson's wedding. Lester died in June of 2004.

Evangeline was a very active member of Salem United Church of Christ, where she participated in Women's Fellowship and a Bible Study group, as well as helped with cleaning and preparing food for countless church activities. She also enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, sewing, knitting and doing crafts. She was an avid book reader, liked to fish and loved to play Scrabble. Her baking, especially cookies and pies, was a treat for all of her family and many friends who looked forward to getting a visit along with the goodies. Evangeline enjoyed being around people. She liked to have coffee with her friends at the S&D and always looked forward to spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie (Neil) Sanderman and Joanne Groth, both of Waukon, and Sharon (Richard) Kallao of Chicago, IL; three step-children, Linda Gola of Osakis, MN, Lois Peterson of Coon Rapids, MN, and Clayton Teslow of Minneapolis, MN; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchildren; and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Walter and Lester; two sisters, Dorothy Snitker and Aurelia Nagel; a brother, Ceylon Stock; a grandson, Craig Martins; and two step-sons, Rodney and Carl Teslow.

Casketbearers are Wayne Teslow, Don and Jim Nagel, James Harris, and Lucas and Charles Stoakes.
