Florence J. Marsh,88, formerly of 1000 16th Ave. SE, Cedar Rapids, and Waukon, died Sunday, April 14, 1996, in the Mechanicsville Care Center after a short illness. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Kuba Funeral Home East, where friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and after 9 a.m. Monday. Burial: Linwood Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Felts will officiate.
Survivors include a niece, Elaine and husband Larry England of Cedar Rapids; a grandniece, Capt. Ellen England of Minneapolis; and several cousins.
Born in Allamakee County near Waukon on March 5, 1908, she was the daughter of Otto and Jolena Wittenberger Helming. She graduated from Waukon High School and attended Waukon Junior College for two years. Florence then taught in a one-room school for a year. She attended summer classes at the University of Iowa for two years to obtain her certification, then taught seventh and eighth grade in the Waukon school system for 10 years. Florence also was a typist clerk in the Allamakee County Engineer's Office for four years. In 1945, she moved to Cedar Rapids, where she worked at Cherry-Burrell for 27 years before retirement. Florence married Marvin Spiegler in 1939. He died in an accident while working on the Alaska highway near Dawson Creek. In 1947, she married Alvin Marsh in Iowa City. He died Oct. 2, 1991. Florence was a member of First Christian Church, May Frick Circle and Christian Women's Fellowship at the church.
Her capacity for love, compassion and happiness will be missed by her family and friends.
