MRS. WILLIAM (Mabel Ann Schultz) SCHMIDT

Funeral services for Mabel Schmidt were held Thursday, June 16, at 11 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran Church at Castalia. The Rev. Julius L. Peterson officiated. Mrs. Gerald Hager was organist. The congregation sang, "How Great Thou Art", "The Old Rugged Cross", and "What a Friend We Have In Jesus". The Schutte Funeral Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Pleasant View Cemetery.

Mabel Ann Schmidt, daughter of Henry and Alvina (Warnholtz) Schultz, was born October 13, 1897 in Allamakee County, Iowa. She died Sunday night, June 12, 1988 in the Good Samaritan Center at Postville.

She was baptized November 11, 1898 in St. Paul Lutheran Church at Postville and became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Castalia in 1962 . Mabel attended the rural schools of Bloomfield Township.

On June 30, 1917, she was married to William Schmidt in the Lutheran Parsonage at Castalia. They had two children. For a brief time they lived at Wadena and then moved to a farm near Castalia, where they bottled and sold milk. Mabel was a telephone operator for the Pleasant Ridge Telephone Company for 37 years, retiring in 1961.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, William, who died in 1962, a daughter, Cleora (Mrs. Phillip Wander), a son, Hervey, a granddaughter, Roberta Schmidt, six brothers, Louis, who died in infancy, George, Joe, Roy, Elmer and Henry, and a sister, Elsie (Mrs. Dean Kneeskern).

Surviving are a son-in-law, Phillip Wander, of Castalia, six grandchildren, Cletus Wander and his wife, Loretta, Craig Wander and his wife, Lauralea, Chris Bodensteiner and her husband, Keith, Clifton Schmidt and his wife, Karen, Steven Schmidt and his wife, Patty, and Sandra (Schmidt) and her husband, Mark Dristler, two step-grandsons, Jerry and Roger Barnholtz, 13 great grandchildren, Colette, Darren and Bradley Wander, Lori, Samantha, Jason, and John Bodensteiner, Steven and Tricia Schmidt, David Dristler, Dawn (Dristler) Young, and Danny and Denise Dristler, one great-great grandson, Mark Alan Young, a brother-in-law, Dean Kneeskern of Cresco, and two sisters-in-law, Amanda Schultz of Castalia and Amanda Schultz of Postville.

Casket bearers: Wayne Kneeskern, Art Schultz, Verne Koenig, Robert Kneeskern, Milton Koenig, James Schultz.
