Richard Francis "Dick" Blocker was born on January 19, 1948 in Waukon, IA, the son of Maurice and Jeanne (Hancock) Blocker. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Patrick's Catholic Church and graduated from St. Patrick's High School in Waukon. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin at Steven's Point.

On January 17, 1981 he married Dawn J. Burrett at St. Patrick's. Dick started his working career by joining the family business, Blocker Milling Company in Waukon. He did a variety of jobs and took some technical training in chemical handling. After the milling business closed, he opened Northern Iowa Sports Shop in Waukon in 1987. The sports shop sold a wide variety of outdoor activity supplies as well as fishing and hunting gear. Health conditions forced him to close the shop and retire in 2000.

Dick was an active outdoorsman all his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, taking a number of trips to lakes in Canada. He enjoyed golf, drove a stock car in local racing events, and was active in Pheasants Forever. Dick and Dawn also enjoyed a number of trips, traveling throughout the United States. He liked watching sports events with his family and was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Chicago Cubs and Waukon Indians. A number of years ago, Dick was instrumental in starting North Fork Recreational Territory in rural Waukon, an area he affectionately called "The Farm". He especially enjoyed young people and loved to follow the activities of his own kids as well as spending time with his special neighbors, Morgan and Mason.

Survivors include his wife Dawn of Waukon; 4 children, Stephanie (Michael) Riggert of Algona, IA, Michael (Megan) Blocker of Waukon, Andrea Blocker, serving in the Air Force and currently stationed in Goldsboro, NC, and Sarah (fiance' Casey Walsh) Blocker of Waukon; a grandson, Ethan Riggert; his mother, Jeanne Blocker of Waukon; and 3 brothers, Dennis (Marlene), Don (Dawn Rae) and Dave (Anne) Blocker, all of Waukon. He is preceded in death by his father.
