Robert J. Bakkum, 68, of Waukon, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Robert Joseph Bakkum was born June 6, 1938 in Waukon in the building which now houses parts of the Good Samaritan Center. He was the son of Roy Conrad Allen and Jessie Hardwick (Hubbard) Bakkum. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon.

Robert graduated from Waukon High School in 1956 and attended Drake University for a year. After deciding to follow in his father's footsteps, he enrolled at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, where he graduated with honors in 1967. He moved back to Waukon, where he practiced with his father at Bakkum Chiropractic Clinic until Roy's death in 1979. Robert continued to practice on his own until poor health forced his retirement.

Robert pursued a number of special interests during his life. As a young boy, his fascination with insects earned him the nickname "Bugs". Later, his interest in electronics led to a long-time hobby of working with CB radios, both on the air as well as fixing and repairing them. He also had a talent for photography and took a large number of creative and interesting pictures with his camera.

Survivors include a sister, Delores Anne (John) Nolan of Wanganui, New Zealand, two nieces and a nephew. He is preceded in death by his parents.
