Obituary of Ross E. Thornton:

Funeral services for Ross E. Thornton were held Friday, August 28 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville. Rev. Julius Peterson officiated. Interment was in the Postville Cemetery. Schutte Funeral Service, Postville, was in charge of arrangements.

Ross Earl Thornton, son of Clarence and Martha (Entwistle) Thornton, was born December 28, 1894 in Monona Township, Clayton County, Iowa. He died Tuesday, August 25, 1987 at the Community Memorial Hospital in Postville.

He attended rural schools near his home. On January 17, 1917 he was married to Ora Honn. The couple had 6 children. They moved to Postville after retiring from farming in 1943. Ross then went to work at the Postville Locker Plant, and then was employed by the Hanson and Matson Egg Buying Station. After he retired he spent the rest of his life living in Postville.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Ora, who died October 15, 1958, one son, Clarence, a granddaughter, Denice Kara, 4 brothers, Henry, Vern, Lloyd and George.

He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Orville (Helen) Harnack, Postville, Mrs. Eldo (Berniece) Hoffman, Garnavillo, Mrs. Bernard (Dora Jean) Snitker, Waukon and Mrs. Marjorie Fennel and Mrs. Irene Entringer, both of Dubuque, 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Harry (Ruth) Hinman, Monona, Mrs. Lynn (Daisy) Livingood, Waukon and Mrs. Harlan (Frances) Harnack, Castalia.

Ross was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Postville, and a past member of the Odd Fellows Lodge.

Casket bearers were Neil Adam, Steven Kiesau, Jerry Fennel, Mike Dobson, Francis Munz and Richard Davison.
