Lansing friends were shocked yesterday morning when news spread around that Mrs. J. W. Wendel had passed away about 9 am. at her home near Church. Deceased had been in poor health since last fall, when she submitted to a nasal operation at Grandwiew hospital, LaCrosse, and three weeks ago was taken to the Lutheran hospital there for a goitre operation. She was able to be brought home a week ago Monday, and had since failed till the end came.

Bertha Englehorn, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Matt Englehorn, pioneer settlers, was born in Allamakee county Oct. 12, 1880, and spent her entire life here. In December, 1899, she was married to John W. Wendel, who survives her, with six sons and one daughter, as follows; Howard, Harry, Clarence, Alfred, Kermit, Bobby and Lillian. One sister, Mrs Ben Decker, and one brother, Henry Englehorn, both of Church; and several half-brothers, also survive to mourn her loss.

Mrs. Wendel was a true Christian wife and mother, and will be sadly missed in the home where she so loved to preside. She was a kind neighbor and friend, and had a wide acquaintanceship, who will deeply regret her passing.

The funeral will take place from the family home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. C.H. Hoffman officiating, and interment will be made in the Oak Hill cemetery here.
