Barbara Hirth Wendel was born in Lansing township, Allamakee county, Iowa, July 22, 1854, and died Jan. 8, 1923. On March 5, 1874, she was married to William Wendel and for thirty-six years they lived an a farm one mile west of Church. For the last thirteen years they have made their home in Lansing.

To this union seven sons were born, all of whom with her husband survive her. She also leaves fourteen grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Annie May, of Victoria, BC. Canada, and Mrs Adam Decker,of Lansing; also two brothers, Andrew Hirth of Lansing, and Adam Hirth of Dubuque.

Her illness caused by complicated disease extended over several months. On Saturday, Jan 6, she was stricken with paralysis which ended her earthly career. She was a member of the Methodist church for fifty years. She was a kind, and faithful, loving mother who leaves a vacancy that cannot be filled.

Funeral services were held in the Federated church, Lansing, Thursday, January 11, conducted by Rev. Wm. E. Butler, pastor of the Methodist church, Waukon.
