Mrs. Catherine Sires passed away Thursday afternoon, Jan. 23, 1946, at her home in New Albin. Mrs. Sires had enjoyed the best of health until seven years ago when she suffered a slight stroke and had been ailing since then until her death.
As Catherine Burroughs she was born March 30, 1866 in Dubuque, Ia., a daughter of the late Stephen and Mary Elizabeth Burroughs. When 7 years of age she came with her parents to Allamakee County, living near Dorchester. On Dec. 30, 1884 she was married to John Sires at De Soto, Wisconsin, establishing their home on a farm near Dorchester, Iowa, moving to New Albin about thirty-five years ago which has since been her home.
"Grandma Sires" as she was better known to everyone in this community, was one of New Albin’s most beloved ladies, always devoted to her home and church. She was very hospitable and ready to help wherever needed. She was a member of the Methodist Church and served as president of the Ladies Aid for a number of years.
She is survived by three sons, Jas. of New Albin, Dan of Dorchester and Roy of New Hampton; one step-son, Frank of Olympia, Wash.; also one sister, Mrs. Sarah Sheriff of Lansing; three brothers, David Burroughs of Waukon; Ephriam Burroughs, Dorchester; and John Burroughs of New Albin.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, Jan. 6th, at the M.E. Church with the Rev. Park Anderson officiating. Burial was made in the family lot in the English Bench cemetery. Casket bearers were her six grandsons, Forrest, Alvin, Cleon, James, Robert and Calvin Sires.
Mrs. Sires is also survived by 50 grandchildren and 54 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death also by two sisters.
Relatives from a distance who attended the funeral services were: Mrs. Tom Sires and son Joe, Madison, Wis.; Vern Sires and son Floyd, La Porte City, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Roy Sires and sons Sardius and Thomas, New. Hampton; Mr. and Mrs. James Sires, Mr. and Mrs. L. Britain and family, Sumner, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Sires and son Barry, Tulare, S.D.; and Mrs. Ole Britain, Fredricksburg, Iowa.
