Neil William Kumpf, 71, of Dorchester, IA, died Tuesday, January 8, 2002, at the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, following a lengthy illness. He was born on December 13, 1930 in Spring Grove, the son of Floyd and Bessie (Smith) Kumpf. He attended Dorchester Elementary School and Caledonia High school. From 1951 to 1959 he served in the US Navy as a machinist mate and saw duty in Korea and China.
Following the service he worked for several years in Rockford, IL, before returning to the Dorchester area. There he worked at the Kumpf Grocery Store and as a hired hand for several area farmers. Neil was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church in Dorchester and the Drydal-Prolow American Legion Post 249 of Spring Grove. He enjoyed going to auctions and collected salt and pepper shakers as well as other items.
Survivors include three sisters: Dorine (Irvin) Muller and Audrey Rogen, both of Rockford, IL, and Sheilah (Merlin) Nelson of Dorchester; also several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Norval, Freddie and Nathan.
Services were held Friday, January 11, 11 am at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Rev. David E. Schafer officiating. Burial with graveside military rites were in Dorchester Methodist Cemetery, Dorchester. Friends called from 3-7 pm Thursday at the Martin Funeral Home.Caledonia Argus 16 Jan 2002
