November 16, 1926 - October 19, 2006

Eldo G. Kugel, 79, of Postville, IA, died Thursday, October 19, 2006 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, IA. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 24th at 11:00 a.m. at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, with Pastor Judy Scheer officiating. Burial with graveside military rites will be in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Eldo George Kugel was born on November 16, 1926 in Waukon, IA, the son of Carl and Esther (Hermeier) Kugel. He attended rural elementary school and graduated from Waukon High School. Following his graduation, Eldo served in the US Army. He spent time working in the shipyard at Ft. Eustis, VA as well as being a guard at a POW camp. Following his discharge he attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids and Luther College in Decorah.

On March 28, 1954 he married Marjorie Mae Martin at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon. Eldo started his working career by doing some construction and electrical work with his brother-in-law, Calvin Winter. He then spent 21 years as a meat processor at Hygrade Packing Plant in Postville. After leaving Hygrade he worked on the family farm and for Waste Management, overseeing the rural collection sites. Later he returned to the packing industry and worked at Agri Processors and Iowa Turkey Products in Postville as well as Rock Dell Meats near Rochester, MN.

Eldo had a life-long love of the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as shooting clay pigeons. He was a long time member of Allamakee County Sportsman's Club and enjoyed collecting shotguns. Spending time with his family and grandchildren, playing cards and collecting old coins were some of his other favorite pastimes.

Survivors include his 7 children, Lawrence of Earlville, IA, Steven of Ventura, CA, Cheryl Schubert of Decorah, Zelda Kugel of Milaca, MN, James of Postville, Kenneth (Maliu) of Antelope, CA and Jeff (Jenny) of Waukon; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, LaVonne Ewing and Ileta Oakland, both of Waukon; and a brother, Donald (Barbara) of Lansing, MI. He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Marjorie who died in 1982; an infant son David; 2 sisters, Ruth Cooper and Marjorie Winter; and a brother, Roger.

Honorary casketbearers are Dale Kiesau, Lloyd Oakland, Terry Winter, Gary Cooper, Keith Burger and Bob Lewey. Casketbearers are his grandchildren, David and Julie Seegmiller, Jarrod Hauk, Joseph Valley, Jenny Kugel, Melissa Melchior, Brandy and Joshua Heier, Travis Kruse and Hope Bahr.
