Rosena L. Winters

Rosena L. Winters, 95, of Waukon, died Monday, October 30, 2006 at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were Thursday, November 2 at 10:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Lynn G. Groe officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon.

Rosena Lena Winters was born August 17, 1911 on the rural Postville, farm of her parents, George Louis and Anna (Madous) Rolfs. She was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville, confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Decorah and attended the rural "McKay School" in Winneshiek County.

August 22, 1928, she and Marvin L. Winters were married at the First Baptist Church parsonage in Waukon. Rosena and Marvin lived their lives together in Allamakee and Winneshiek counties, where she was a very hard working mother, homemaker and farm wife, raising her own four children as well as a niece and nephew. For 10 years she also worked as a cook at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon.

Rosena enjoyed playing cards, sewing and quilting things for others and family picnics. She was an excellent cook and particularly known for her pies. A loving and caring woman, she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include three children, Eileen (Fred) Schossow of Leonard, ND, Donald (Mary) Winters of Waukon, and Richard (Norrene) Winters of Marion; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and her beloved nephew, Hartley Latterman of Waterloo; a daughter in-law, LaVonne Brandt of Frankville. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marvin; a son, LeRoy; a grandson, Gary Winters; a great-granddaughter, Chonda Spilde; three sisters, Lydia Grotegut, Ella Clark and Elsie Latterman; four brothers Harvey, Leonard, Richard and Walter Rolfs; and a beloved niece, Mildred Hermanson.Her grandchildren served as casketbearers.
