James Tartt b Paris, Henry Co., TN, Nov. 11, 1829 and was 71y 1m 12d.

With his father he came to Galena, IL in early life & engaged in the lead smelting business until 1857 when he removed to Iowa in company with his brother-in-law T.C. Smith, engaged in general merchandizing at Dorchester, continuing in the business for 16 years.

In 1872 he moved to New Albin & in company with James Palmer, now deceased, bought & shipped products of the farm. J.T. Robinson was also a business partner at one time. Some time ago he formed a partnerhip with G. A. Erickson in the lumber business and subsequently in general merchandising continuing the same until the year 1888 when he embarked in the drug business with his son-in-law W.O. Bock, controlling an interest in same at the time of his death.

On June 29, 1854, he was married to Miss Phebe Eleanor Goble. Four sons & 2 daus. Living: Oscar, Walter, Mrs. V. Hutter and Mrs. W. O. Bock. Member M. E. Church. Buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Lansing.
