Evelyn S. Echard, 90, died Thursday, August 1, 2002, at Thornton Manor, Lansing, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Monday, August 5, at 11:00 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Rev. Steve Campbell officiating. Burial interment was in Oakland Cemetery. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted with arrangements. Evelyn Seth Neubauer was born October 9, 1911, on her parents' rural Monona farm, the daughter of William and Olive (Stafford) Neubauer. She was baptized and confirmed at Monona Methodist Church and attended rural elementary school in the Monona area. On May 4, 1932, she married Lee Echard in Oelwein. She was a stay at home mother while her daughter Gloria was going to school. After Lee died, she worked at Lee's restaurant as a waitress in Waukon for several years and was a weather observer for the National Weather Service. Evelyn has been a resident at Thornton Manor since 1996.
Evelyn was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and the UMW. She enjoyed playing cards, and loved to cook and work in the garden. She was a avid Chicago Cubs fan and Hawkeye fan. Evelyn traveled to Arizona to spend time with her sister and they would go to Las Vegas occasionally. Evelyn is preceded in death by parents and her husband, Lee. Survivors include a daughter, Gloria (Walter) Wedo and a grandson, Erik Wedo, both of Waukon; one brother, Kenneth Neubauer, Bartlesville, Okla.; one sister, Marjorie Whalen of Mesa, Ariz.; one sister-in-law, Darlene Johnson, Waukon; four cousins, Leone Hageman, Waukon, Dorothy Dorkin, Springfield, Ill., Mayme Henderson, Luana, and Madonna Syverson, Elkader. Casketbearers were Dale and Dan Echard, Dean Downing, Lanny Jonson, Jeff Schon, and Steve Wiedner.
