Marian Smith

Marian W. Smith, 77, of Waukon, IA, died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2006 at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Friday, Aug., 11 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, in Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon assisted the family with arrangements.

Marian Wilhelmina Kruger Smith was born May 30, 1929 in Ludlow Township rural Waukon, the daughter of Paul and Luella (Bauercamper) Kruger. She was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon. Marian attended Ludlow Elementary School, graduated from Waukon High School in normal training. She taught school in rural Allamakee County.

March 6, 1954 she married Marcus Benton Smith at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. She worked at the Waukon Bakery for several years. Marian and Marcus owned and operated the local Montgomery Ward Store. After selling the Montgomery Ward Store, she worked for the Allamakee County Auditor's office for 18 years before retiring. Marian was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed camping, fishing, playing cards, cooking and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include three sisters-in-law, Lorayne Gallagher of Des Moines, IA, Greta Keepers of Waupun, WI and Jean Pufahl of Waukon; a brother-in-law, William Van Horn of Waukon; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Marcus who died in 2001; and a sister, Delores Van Horn.

Honorary Casketbearers were Helen and Evertt Van Scoy, Joan Bauercamper, Lorayne Gallagher, Jean Pufahl, William Van Horn and members of VFW Auxailiary. Casketbearers were Zach and Chris Rigel, Brad Brown, Abe Maske, Jeremy and Ben Van Horn.
