LaVerne L. "Vern" Cuvelier, 66, of Waukon, died Saturday, May 15, 2004, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 18 at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon with Rev. Amy Perkins officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

LaVerne Lyle Cuvelier was born September 2, 1937, on the rural Clarksville farm of his parents, Virgil and Catherine (Hartema) Cuvelier. Vern attended Parkersburg schools. He owned and operated the Shamrock Restaurant in Aplington, Iowa, for several years. Vern moved to Waukon in 1986.

On September 5, 1987, he married Mary Ambrose at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. After they were married, they managed the Fireplace Lounge and Dining and the Vet's Club for several years. He was a member of the Waukon Golf and Country Club in Waukon. Vern loved to cook and also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Vern enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, especially hunting, golfing, fishing, and taking rides in the country. He was an avid Hawkeye fan. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Waukon; five sons, Kevin (Jane) Cuvelier of Champaign, Ill., Bryan (Glenda) Cuvelier of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Todd (Vicki) and Trent (Becky) Mitchell, both of Waukon, and Troy Mitchell of Denver, Iowa; two daughters, Cindy (Rusty) Arn of Independence, Mo., and Lorri Smith of Washington, Ind.; 19 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; three brothers, Duane (Shirley) of Waterloo, Keith (Sharon) of Aplington, and Darwin (Debbie) of Salt Lake City, Utah; two sisters, Sandy (Bob) Orth of Guttenberg and Bonnie (Jim) Frerichs of Charles City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jerald. Casketbearers were his five sons, Kevin and Bryan Cuvelier, Todd, Troy, and Trent Mitchell, and Wayne Ruroden.
