John Jenkins, 66, of Loveland, Colo., passed away from a heart attack Tuesday, May 4, 2004, at Poudre Valley Hospital. A funeral service was held Saturday, May 8, at the Fort Collins Marriott's outdoor pavilion with Dale Piers, chaplain for Hospice of Larimer County, officiating. A memorial service honoring John will be held in Waukon at a later date. Allnutt Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

John was born June 22, 1937, in Waukon, Iowa, the oldest of five sons born to Herbert and Verna (Monserud) Jenkins. He attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, where he received his baccalaureate degree. John spent his life teaching, first in Iowa, then Illinois, and in Colorado since 1983. At the time of his death, John was teaching at Front Range Community College in Fort Collins and also worked as a driving instructor for Conahan's Driving School. John was loved by very many on the Larimer County campus. He always made time to stop and talk and share. It seemed that his life was in service to bringing caring advice and good cheer to others. His students uniformly loved him as we did. He was the consummate teacher with the magic touch. A celebration of his life was held at the college May 11. John served in the United States Army from 1960 to 1963. He enjoyed traveling abroad, often as a group leader for student groups. He loved riding his motorcycle through the Colorado mountains.

He is survived by his mother, Verna Jenkins of Waukon; his brothers, Richard Jenkins of Ankeny, Robert (Sherry) Jenkins of Waukon, Joe (Mary) Jenkins of Waukon, and Larry (Sonja) Jenkins of Fort Collins, Colo. He is also survived by his son, David of Michigan, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the John Jenkins Memorial History Scholarship in care of Allnutt Funeral Service.
