Wilson H. Cooper, age 91, of Lansing, Iowa, died Friday afternoon, April 30, 2004, at Thornton Manor Nursing Home in Lansing. Funeral services were held Monday, May 3 at the United Methodist Church in Lansing with Rev. Keith Putney officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery, Lansing, where military rites were accorded by the Beck-Glenn-Strong Post #50 of the American Legion and the Gustav F. Kerndt Post #5981 of the VFW. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home of Lansing was in charge of arrangements.

Wilson was born in Lansing September 3, 1912, to Stewart and Katie (Horne) Cooper. He attended Lansing Public School and graduated in 1930. Wilson served in the Navy from April 28, 1942, to September 2, 1945. He was aboard the destroyer Eversole in the Southwest Pacific when it was torpedoed and sunk. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the American Theater, Asiatic-Pacific, and European African ribbons, as well as two Invasion Stars for battle in the Philippine Islands.

He was united in marriage to Emma Bone November 14, 1945, at Strawberry Point, Iowa. Wilson worked for the Iowa Conservation Commission at Lansing for 42 years from 1932 to 1974. Wilson loved and respected the Mississippi River and wildlife. He enjoyed fishing, pheasant and mushroom hunting, and gardening. He also enjoyed daily coffee with friends and co-workers from New Albin and car rides along the river to the Isle of Capri. He belonged to the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Masonic Evergreen Lodge #144, and was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Wilson is survived by nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma on September 1, 1987, his parents, and a sisters, Frances Richie, along with four half-brothers. Casketbearers were Bob Leppert, Lester Stahl, John Rethwisch, Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg, Barney Diersen, and George Lee.
