Reginald "Bud" Mahr

Reginald “Bud” Mahr, age 89, died Saturday, July 8, 2006, at Virginia Gay Hospital following an extended illness. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vinton with Father Walter Kleinfehn as Celebrant. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, Vinton, is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established.

Bud was born April 16, 1917, at Lycurgus, Iowa, to Walter and Mary (Schwartzhoff) Mahr. On February 22, 1938, he married Evelyn Casey at New Albin, Iowa. The couple farmed near Dorchester before moving to Van Horne in the early 1950s. In 1962 they moved to Vinton. Evelyn preceded her husband in death June 30, 2002.

In addition to farming, Bud owned the Kozy Korner until 1961 and was the founder and owner of Mahr Construction from 1962 until his retirement. Bud loved to fly, held a private pilot’s license, and was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vinton.

He is survived by four sons, Lowell (Mary Ellen) Mahr of Vinton, Kenneth Mahr of Cedar Rapids, James (Kathy) Mahr of Grants Pass, Ore., and Brett (Lois) Mahr, Cedar Rapids; his six daughters, Janice Parr of Vinton, Joanne (Lyle) Ternus of Dysart, Maxine Braasch of Cedar Rapids, Marilyn (Marv) Hite of Vinton, Kathy Lea of Cedar Rapids, and Cynthia (Bryan) Lower of Cedar Rapids; 26 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two brothers, Gene (Judy) Mahr of Lime Springs, Iowa, and Wally (Marianne) Mahr of Dorchester, Iowa; his sister, Margie Ohrstrom of Rock Island, Ill.; and two sisters-in-law, Lila Mahr of Waukon, and Lois Mahr of South Sioux City, Neb.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Jack Parr; a grandson, Jacob Mahr; two brothers, Raymond and Joseph Mahr; and three sisters, Genevieve Wilson, Lou Mae Ryan, and Maddy Schwartzhoff.
