Rueben “Frank” Hager, 92, of Waukon, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, June 17, at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon, with Pastor Tom Buresh officiating. Burial with military honors was in Oakland Cemetery, Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Rueben Edward “Frank” Hager was born April 29, 1914, in Waukon, Iowa, the son of Albert and Anna (Helming) Hager. He was baptized and confirmed at Zalmona Presbyterian Church, where he has remained a life-long member. Frank attended Ludlow No. 2 Rural School and Waukon High School.

August 27, 1937, he married Goldie Agnes Faegre at the Lutheran Parsonage in Waukon. They operated the Soda Grill Restaurant in Waukon from 1937 until 1943 when Frank entered the US Army. He served as a rifleman with Company F of the 475th Infantry and earned a Purple Heart in the India Burma Campaign of World War II. Following his discharge in 1946, Frank returned to Allamakee County where he farmed in Union Prairie Township for 43 years. He operated a dairy herd and raised beef, hogs, and grain. In 1989 he retired and moved to Waukon.

Frank was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks Lodge in Decorah, and the Waukon Golf and Country Club. For 25 years he enjoyed working with Ray Sweeney on the annual Threshing Days events as well as helping at many horse sales. He and Goldie were very social people and entertained often. Frank also enjoyed making new friends and always made people feel welcome, helping others whenever he could.

Survivors include four nephews, Jack and Alan Hager and Jim and Jack Faegre; and two nieces, Donnelle Daugherty and Phyllis Carpenter; along with many, many friends from a wide variety of ages.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Goldie, who died in 1999; and a brother, Donald.

Honorary casketbearers were Rupert and Martha Caballero, Leonard and Bernice Thies, John and Lorna Kerndt, Walter and Gloria Larson, LeRoy and Marcella McCabe, Walter and Lorraine Teslow, and Wilbur and Shirley Rose. Casketbearers were Gary Berger, Jerry Sweeney, Brian Sweeney, Mike Hager, Neil Becker, Drew Hager, Meryle Honn, and Dave Bahr.
