Dorothea F. Schuttemeier, 95, of Waukon, Iowa, died Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at Good Samaritan Center in Waukon. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 15, at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon, with Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Waukon. Martin Funeral Home in Waukon was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothea Florence was born June 7, 1911, on the Union Prairie Township, rural Waukon, Iowa, farm of her parents, August and Caroline Minnie (Brandt) Herman. She was baptized at Zalmona Presbyterian Church in rural Waukon and later confirmed at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon. Dorothea graduated from Waukon High School in 1931 and received her teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. She taught for six years in rural Allamakee County Schools.

May 10, 1938, she married Otto Schuttemeier at First Presbyterian Church in Waukon. She and Otto farmed for 29 years before moving to Waukon in 1969. Dorothea then worked at Good Samaritan Center as a medical aide for 20 years, retiring in 1989. She entertained the residents by playing the Holiday Lowery Organ every Friday morning and she and her twin sister, Bernice Hagen, performed musical programs at Good Samaritan Center for many years.

Dorothea was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church, its ladies’ circles, and an honorary member of Presbyterian Women, taking part in their gatherings. She loved to write and read letters to and from her family and friends. She also had a great interest in art and painted many oil and acrylic paintings.

Survivors include her daughter, Carole Joyce (Gunter) Tuchel of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two granddaughters, Lisa (Douglas) Van Waart of Stone City, Iowa, and Dr. Tammy (Rod Williamson) Tuchel of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Trinity Dae Williamson; a sister-in-law, Laura Breeser of Caledonia, Minn.; and a brother-in-law, Martin Schuttemeier of Evanston, Wyo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Otto, who died in 1992; three sisters, her twin Bernice Hagen, Mabel Miller, and Hertha Grotegut; and two brothers, Elmer and Lawrence Herman.

Honorary casketbearers were Nyles Herman, Norman Miller, Claude Shafer, Jay Johnson, Merlin Kruger, Sonny Hoffman, John Breeser, and Marlene Habhab. Casketbearers were Leander Breeser, Abby Habhab, Donald Hanson, Joe Egan, and Brad and Eugene Herman.
