Paul Welzel

Funeral services for Paul Welzel were held Saturday, May 6, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. at the Schutte Funeral Home in Postville, Iowa. The Reverend Steve Brackett officiated. Special music was provided by Russell Guyer Paul's granddaughters, Cheryl Schmitt, Linda Jellings, Jackie O'Connell, and Stacy Oakland. The Casket Bearers were: Justin Fonley, Brandon Schmitt, Dean Schmitt, Charlie O'Connell, Darby Jellings, Danny Oakland, Craig Spies, Dan Nesteby. Honorary Casket Bearers were: Justin Fonley, Brandon Schmitt, Dean Schmitt, Charlie O’Connell, Darby Jellings, Danny Oakland, Craig Spies, Dan Nesteby. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Paul Frederick Welzel was born January 27, 1917 on the family farm in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County, near Postville, Iowa, to George B. and Sophia Amelia (Schultz) Welzel. He passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2006 in the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center at LaCrosse, Wisconsin, at the age of 89 years, 3 months, and 5 days. Paul was baptized February 25, 1917 in St. Paul Lutheran Church by the Reverend E. Schmidt and confirmed there on March 9, 1931 by the Reverend R. B. Garten. He attended the Grand Meadow school and Postville High School.

Paul was married to Iona Malinda Nesteby on May 17, 1941 at the parsonage in Decorah, Iowa by the Rev. H. A. Hoff. To this union two daughters were born. They farmed for a short time and then Paul began working in the plumbing and heating business until he retired. Paul was a member of a local bowling team. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, gardening and visiting with friends and neighbors.

Surviving are two daughters, Linda and her husband, Bill Anderson of Postville and Carol Guyer of West Union; four grandchildren, Cheryl (Dean) Schmitt, Linda (Darby) Jellings, Jackie (Charlie) O'Connell, and Stacy (Danny) Oakland and 9 great grandchildren: Justin, Brandon, Amanda, Jackie, Rachel, David, Linda, Johnathan, and Dylan, and a brother, Harlan (LaVerda) Welzel, Eldorado, Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Jay Guyer, one brother, Roy (Margaret) Welzel, and four sisters, Oraline Welzel, Grace (Earl) Gilster, Ruth (Rudy) Hinzman, and Betty (Herold) Paulson.
