Doris "Judy" Hammell

Doris “Judy” Hammell, age 83, of Lansing, Iowa, died Sunday evening, May 7, 2006, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wis. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday May 13, 2006, at Immaculate Conception Church in Lansing with Rev. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery in Lansing. Friends may call Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home in Lansing.

Judy was born in Merrillan, Wis., May 28, 1922, to Charles C. and Mahilla Lillian (Tennet) Cordes. Judy married Ray Hammell April 15, 1978, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua Iowa. Judy was a longtime member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lansing. Over the years, Judy had worked at Northern Engraving in Lansing and Captains Restaurant in DeSoto, among other places. She loved art, poetry, writing songs, singing, sewing, baking, being outdoors, fishing, dancing, and being the best grandma in the whole wide world.

Judy is survived by eleven children, Ann Covington of Oregon, Lynne (Arley) Sheckles of DeWitt, Iowa, Terry Cordes of Madison, Wis., Lois (Dave) Homewood of Dyersville, Iowa, Stan Larson of Lansing, June (Cy) Livingood of Frankville, Iowa, Dan (Sharon) Larson of Upland Crest, Minn., David Larson of Lansing, Shari (Lee) Shiemann of Burlington, Wis., Ron Larson of Waukon, and Carl “Tyke” (Shadi) May Jr. of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mildred Peasley of La Crosse, Wis. Judy is also survived by her stepchildren, Kenneth (Hazel) Hammell of Wapello, Iowa, Carolyn Kukes of Lansing and Dorothy Schwartzhoff, both of Lansing, Shirley (Mike) Fink of New Albin, Kathryn “Kay” Colvin of Fort Scott, Kan., Mark (Renee) Hammell of Dorchester, Roger (Cindy) Hammell and Mary (Craig) Sand, both of Lansing, Elizabeth “Betsy” Fish of Olympia, Wash., and Gerald “Jerry” (Deb) Hammell of La Crosse; a step-daughter-in-law, Margaret Hammell of La Crosse; many step-grandchildren; and many step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother in law, Walter (Betty) Hammell of Caledonia, Minn., and sisters-in law, Mary Blake of Waukon, Agnes Troendle of Spring Grove, Minn., and Margaret Blake of Dorchester.

Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Hammell on May 10, 2003; three children in infancy, Jimmy, Jamie, and Harold; a granddaughter, Tammy on June 25, 1970; four siblings, Irene Oyer, Olive Brumley, George Cordes, and Vernie Cordes; and a son-in-law, Fred Covington. Also preceding her in death were several of Ray’s family members, including his children, Cornelius and Virginia; three sons-in-law, Thomas Schwartzhoff, William Erickson, and Joe Colvin; two brothers John Hammell and one in infancy; and Ray’s brothers-in-law, John Blake, Cyril Troendle, and Patrick Blake.

Casketbearers were Matthew Lundt, Shawn Larson, Leif Larson, Don Byrnes Jr., Ricky Kuhnke, Adrian Joe III, and Brian Byrnes. Honorary casketbearers were Roger Hammell, Rick Kuhnke Sr., Junice Bolsinger, Steve Betsinger, Ray Ellefson, Chelsae Joe, and Donna Mae.
