Robert James Sweeney, Sr., 77, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center after a long illness. Services were held Tuesday, August 3 at St. Ludmila Catholic Church by the Rev. Tom McDermott. Burial was in St. John Cemetery with military services. Teahen Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Robert is survived by his wife, Patricia; a son, Bob of West Des Moines; a daughter, Linda (Jerry) Sarenpa of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Bill (Betty) of Dubuque and Cletus (Ella) of Waterloo; three grandchildren, Vicki (Jeff) Schwab and Tammi (James) Smith, all of Cedar Rapids, and Suzy Sweeney of West Des Moines; and four great-grandchildren, Morgan, Austin, Bailee, and Collin. His daughter Vicky and brother Donald preceded him in death. Robert was born March 23, 1927, in Waukon the son of Peter and Edith Deeney Sweeney. He married Patricia Massie November 17, 1952, in Hanover, Ill. He retired in 1985 as a meat cutter from Wilson Foods. He was a member of St. Ludmila Catholic Church, the Eagles, and Wilson retirees. Robert was a Korean War Navy veteran. The American Legion Hanford Post 5 conducted the military graveside services.
