Services Here Tuesday For Auto-Train Accident Victims
Services were conducted Tuesday, August 25, at 11 a.m. from the Community Presbyterian Church for Mr. and Mrs. Leo Ball who were killed in an auto-train crash Saturday morning, August 22, 1970 at a railroad crossing on highway 187, 8½ miles south of Lamont. The Rev. Dick Harberts officiated.
Leo R. Ball, son of Joseph and Bessie (Landreth) Ball, was born January 17, 1918 at Diamond, Missouri. He received his elementary education and graduated from high school at Duenweg, Missouri.
On December 24, 1941, he was united in marriage to Bernice Wallis at Cassville, Missouri. He was employed by the Hoak Construction Co. of Des Moines before serving in military service and after his return. He spent 3 years in the Navy during World War II.
In 1951 Leo began working for the Allamakee-Clayton Electric Cooperative in Postville and was plant superintendent at the time of his death.
Mr. Ball was a member of the Community Presbyterian Church, elected to the Board of Trustees in 1968 and served as chairman of the Board; was a member of the American Legion, Arthur F. Brandt Post #518, serving as post commander in 1955. He was member of Brotherly Love Lodge #204 and served as past Master. He had served on the volunteer fire department and acted as fire chief.
Mr. Ball was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his children, Joseph of Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin and Mary at Iowa City; 2 grandchildren, James and Jared Ball; a sister, Mrs. Doris McMichael of Los Angeles, California; his step-mother, Mrs. Joseph Ball of Duenweg, Missouri; step-brother Dale Williams of Carl Junction, Missouri; 2 step-sisters, Mrs. Inez Green of Duenweg, Missouri and Mrs. Maycle Crawford, Webb City, Missouri.
Burial was in the Postville Cemetery beside his wife.
