Alvina Yohe

Alvina R. Yohe, 89, of rural Caledonia and Houston, MN passed away peacefully Friday, November 11, 2011 surrounded by her family at her home. Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 15 at Jandt-Fredrickson Funeral Home in Caledonia with Rev. Mike Tuionetoa officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
Alvina was born June 7, 1922 in Lansing to Albert and Ferne Belle (Sandry) Protsman, Sr. She was a 1939 graduate of Lansing High School, Lansing, where she was a member of the girls basketball team and enjoyed their class reunions in recent years.
September 12, 1942 she married Robert Yohe, Sr. at Fort Dix, Trenton, N.J., five days before Robert left for 32 months, serving WW II duty in Africa, Italy and France Theatres. In her early years, Alvina worked for the Lansing Button Co., where her mother was also employed. Upon Robert’s honorable discharge from the service, he and Alvina moved to the Cedar Rapids area for one year. In March of 1946, they bought a farm on Gruber Ridge near Lansing and farmed there until 1955, when they purchased a farm between Caledonia and Houston in Sheldon Township, which is still home today.
Alvina was employed at Betty’s Restaurant (now the Redwood Cafe) in Caledonia, Control Data in Spring Grove, MN, for Lucy and Helen at the Family Kitchen in Caledonia, Brach’s Candy Co. (now Farley’s and Sathers Candy Co.) in Winona, MN, and the Boy’s Ranch in Stapleton, NE. She also was employed as a Certified Nursing Assistant for Bethany Lutheran Homes in La Crosse, WI and served as a Senior Companion for Catholic Charities. In her earlier years, Alvina taught Sunday school in Lansing and church school on French Island, La Crosse.
Her hobbies included crocheting items for her family, grandchildren and friends, reading books, collecting coins, making cookbooks, and writing letters and receiving mail from family and friends. Alvina was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker, and family member and she will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include one daughter, Gloria (Jim) Robinson of Maxwell, NE; three sons, Spencer Yohe of Eitzen, MN, and Robert Yohe, Jr. and James Yohe, Sr., both on the family farm in rural Houston, MN; ten grandchildren, Randy Wright, Jr., Raquel (Dave) Jurjens, Russell (Heather) Wright, Laura Yohe, David Yohe, Shane Yohe, Sheri Cushion, Derrick Yohe, Rose Yohe, and James Yohe, Jr.; six great-grandchildren, Michaela, Noah, Levi and Abigail Jurjens, Olivia Yohe and Kaylee Wright; two sisters-in-law, Noel Protsman of Lansing and Phyllis Yohe of Edgewood; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Alvina was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, February 25, 2005; her daughter, Roseann, September 24, 1961; two daughters-in-law, Karen and Debbie Yohe; and three brothers, Norbert “Bud” (Donna) Protsman, Lawrence “Dutch” Protsman, and Albert “Junior” (Vivian) Protsman.
