James Campbell

James (Jim) Robert Campbell, 83, of Waukon died Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at his home. Services were held Saturday, January 22 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Waukon, with burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, rural Waukon.
Jim was born August 5, 1927 to Leonard and Hazel (Riley) Campbell. He was educated in the local schools and joined the Navy July 6, l945 and served in this capacity until August of 1948. August 3, 1957 he was united in marriage to Maxine Huffman at St. Pius church, Cherry Mound. Six children were born to this union. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, a Eucharistic Minister and served on the Parish Council and the St. Patrick’s School Board.
Jim began his working career at a very young age as a bell hop at the old Grand Hotel in Waukon. He worked as a young adult at different businesses in Waukon. He served as a waiter at the S&D and the Model cafes. He worked as a clerk at the JC Penney store, Western Auto and the A&P store. He also worked in Oelwein at Mike’s Grocery and as an Auditor of Switching Revenue at the Belt Railway there.
After his marriage, he moved to Waterloo and took a job with Peoples Bank and Trust. In 1960, he moved his family back to this area and worked at Farmers and Merchants Savings Bank in Waterville and Waukon. From there he transferred to Waukon State Bank for a period of time and then bought and operated the S& D café. After he sold the S&D, he worked for Impro Products until retirement. He served on several boards in the area, including the Waterville Creamery Board, the Mental Health Board at Decorah, the Waukon State Bank Board of Directors and the Impro Products Board.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine; his children, Jay of North Augusta, SC, Brad (Mary) of Evergreen, CO, Kent of Montgomery, AL, Kris (Jeff) Nichols of Grand Junction, CO, Eric (Valerie) of Cedar Rapids, and Dana (Brian) Ardary of Des Moines; his sisters, Mary (Sis) Goltz of Waukon and Barbara Magner of Cedar Rapids; his brothers, Paul of Kansas City, MO and Charlie of North Liberty; and his seven grandchildren, Morgan, Mariah, Tyler, Alex, Avery, Eden and Parker.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Bill, Mike, Pat, Fr. Tom, and John (Bud); and his sisters, Hazel Burke, Kate Mohwinkle, Margaret Corneliuson and Essie Campbell.
