Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Leslie R. Smorstad, age 67, died Sunday, August 31, 1986 at the Veterans Memorial Hospital, Waukon, Iowa. Services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 3 at St. John's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lynn Groe officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Waukon, Iowa with Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Willis Ludeking, Robert Nash, Jessie Ludeking, Gladwin Anderson, Jerry Sweeney, and Maurice Blocker.
A lifetime area resident, he was born February 20, 1919 in Winneshiek County, Iowa to Otto and Florence (Ludeking) Smorstad. He attended rural schools in the area and served in the Navy during World War II. He married Helen Sweeney on April 29, 1945 in Waukon, Iowa. She died in 1973. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, the Allamake Flying Club, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was the owner and operator of a construction firm, a trucker, and a farmer.
He was preceded in death by his father, Otto Smorstad, his wife, Helen and daughter, Cindy, who died as an infant.
Survivors include his mother, Florence Smorstad of Decorah, Iowa; 2 sons, Wayne Smorstad of Clarksville, Tennessee and Lennie Smorstad of Waukon, Iowa and a daughter, Judy Lonning of Waukon, Iowa; 5 grandchildren and a sister, Leila Kruger of Decorah, Iowa.
