Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)A memorial mass for Patrick C. Byrnes was held Monday, July 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Hanover Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. The Rev. Maurice Gallagher was the officiating priest. After the mass, the blessing of the grave in the church cemetery was conducted by the VFW Post 4117 and the American Legion Post No 62 of Waukon, Iowa. Patrick died on June 24, 1985 in Spring Hill, Florida. Present at the mass was his son, Patrick C. Byrnes, Jr. of Des Moines, Iowa, who accepted the American flag from the veterans group in honor of his father.
Patrick was the fifth son of Larry and Nora (Zoll) Byrnes. He was born October 26, 1921 in Hanover Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. He received his education at Immaculate Conception High School in Lansing, Iowa. He served with the Marine Corps during World War II from 1942 to 1946. He was a VFW member. He and the former Mary Kay Rizzo were married November 6, 1944 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was a retired employee of American Motors in Kenosha where he had resided for many years. He had lived in Florida only a brief time prior to his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, Donna, Gertrude, and Gladys Quillin, and 1 brother Lawrence Byrnes.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Kay of Kenosha, Wisconsin; 3 sons, Patrick C. Byrnes of Des Moines, Iowa, David G. Byrnes of Clearwater, Florida, and Lawrence W. Byrnes of Jacksonville, Florida; 1 daughter, Mrs. Al (Mary Pat) Alteri of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; 5 grandsons; 5 brothers, Francis Byrnes, Garland Byrnes, Clement Byrnes, Mark Byrnes, and Victor Byrnes and 4 sisters, Catherine Byrnes, Mary Steinhart, Mrs. Charles (Anita) Murphy, and Mrs. George (Phyllis) Haler.
