Gilbert Harrison Eadie 1902-2000

Gilbert Eadie passed away Thursday, April 6, 2000 in the Northgate Care Center at Waukon, Iowa. He had reached the age of 97 years, four months and 24 days. Inurnment and a memorial service will be held at a later date for Gilbert and Gladys this summer. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Gilbert Harrison Eadie, the son of John and Delia (Kelly) Eadie, was born November 12, 1902, in New York City, New York. Upon the death of his parents in 1911, he was placed, together with his younger brother Walter, in the Brace Farm School for boys in Valhalla, New York.

On July 17, 1913, a group of sixteen children, between the ages of 1½ to 16, were placed on an Orphan Train leaving from New York City to Pratt, Kansas. They were taken to the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Wright. Their stay there was only six months when Mr. Wright sold his farm and moved to Pennsylvania. On January 24, 1914 Gilbert and Walter were brought to Allamakee County, Iowa. They were taken in by Dan and Nettie Kelly, both unmarried. Neither child was adopted.

On June 30, 1936 he was married to Gladys Helen Sunderman in the Zion United Church of Christ at Waukon, Iowa by the Reverends R. L. Van Nice and Frank Stucki. To this union four children were born.

Gilbert and Gladys farmed together in Paint Creek Township, Allamakee County, for 70 years. They moved to Waukon in 1982. Following a fall, Gladys became a resident of the Northgate Care Center. Gilbert had been a resident of Northgate for the last two years.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gladys, who died March 13, 1995, by his brother Walter who passed away at the age of 33 from multiple sclerosis, and also a brother John and sisters, Anna, Florence and Elizabeth.

Surviving are three daughters: Karen Marie (David) LaBonne of Vancouver, Washington, Elaine Ann Eadie of Waukon, and Jean Elizabeth (Ron) Fish of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; a son, John Gilbert (JoAnn) Eadie of Swisher, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Carmen Freed and Scott LaBonne, Lynn and Kyle Rose, Nadine Hansmeier, Brian and Blaine Fish and Todd and Trent Eadie; and seven great grandchildren, Scott Hansmeier and Nicholas Rose, Keryn Hansmeier, Michaela Rose, Morgan Eadie, Landon and Logan Rose, and three step great grandchildren, Jamie Kirby, Jayne Kirby and Mercedes Wade.
