Joseph R. Egli, 82, of Waverly, Iowa, and Lakeland, Fla., died Saturday, February 4, 2006, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center.
Joe was born November 14, 1923, in Clare, Iowa, and was one of ten children of Edward and Sadie (Musselman) Egli, who raised their family in and around the Manson, Iowa, area and attended the local Mennonite Church. He graduated from Gilmore City High School in 1942, attended Iowa State University in Ames, and also served in the U.S. Navy.
While working in Fort Dodge, Iowa, he met Eleanor Ducker and the couple was united in marriage September 21, 1947, in Waverly. The couple took up residence in the hamlet of Bremer, north of Waverly, where they purchased the Bremer Mercantile from Eleanor’s parents and operated the general store for more than 25 years. Joe also served as postmaster of Bremer.
Following the closing of the Bremer Mercantile and the death of Eleanor, Joe became postmaster of New Albin, Iowa. While living there, he met Veronica Baxter of Waukon and they were united in marriage November 27, 1982. Upon Joe’s retirement from the Postal Service, he and Veronica divided their time between Waverly and Lakeland.
Joe is survived by his wife, Veronica; his two sons, Steven (Pam) Egli of Waverly and Brian Egli of Bronxville, N. Y.; his stepdaughters, Denise (Stephen) Duffy of Decorah, Iowa, Cindy Baxter of Clear Lake, Iowa, Kathy (Joe) Schwartzhoff of Decorah, and Laura (Sam) Parizek of Elberon, Iowa; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers, Dr. Gene (Nell) Egli of Starkville, Miss., and Kenneth Egli of Washington, Iowa; his sister, Ruby McCabe of Fort Dodge; and three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Willard (Ginny) Egli, Mrs. Marlon (Sandy) Egli and Mrs. Carvel (Marilyn) Egli.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Eleanor; and six siblings, Lester, Opal, Eleanor, Marlon, Willard, and Carvel.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 16, 2006, at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Waverly. His body was cremated and private family burial will take place at Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. The family will greet friends Wednesday, February 15, from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly.
