Ione Benson

A Mass of Christian Burial was held for Ione Benson Tuesday, November 15, 2005, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville, Iowa. The Reverend John Moran was the Presider. Special music was provided by the St. Bridget Choir, led by organist Linda Bacon. The Casket Bearers were grandchildren: Jim Benson, Jeff Benson, Shannon Benson, Tharin Benson, Scott McCormick, Kevin McCormick. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery. The Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service of Postville was in charge of arrangements.

Ione Gladys (Wacha) Benson was born March 25, 1916, in Howard County, Elma, Iowa, to John Wacha and Mary (Roman) Wacha. She passed away Saturday morning, November 12, 2005, in the Ossian Senior Hospice at Ossian, Iowa, at the age of 89 years, 7 months, and 17 days.

She was baptized in the Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Lourdes, Iowa. Ione attended the rural school near her home. On October 10, 1939 she was married to Harlan Marvin Benson at the Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. To this union seven children were born. The couple farmed for five years in the Lourdes, Elma, Maple Leaf, and Cresco areas. In 1959 they moved to Postville. Ione was a care-giver for many of the local children all of her life. She had many interests that included baseball, especially the Cubs, attending ball games, watching TV, and fishing. Ione was an exceptional cook, loved flowers. and spent many hours sewing and embroidering.

She is survived by five sons, Leonard (Janet), rural, Postville, Joseph Benson, Clear Lake, IA, David Benson, Frankville, IA, Robert Benson, Postville, Thomas (Julie) Benson, Postville, a daughter, Mary (Ken) McCormick, Clear Lake, IA, 18 grandchildren, Jim Benson, Kathy Schroeder, Cheri Koester, Greg Koester, Connie Schroeder, Jeff Benson, Kevin McCormick, Scott McCormick, Susie Boehnke, Brenda Vick, Tina Benson, Kristal Benson, Shannon Benson, Fawn Benson, Tharin Benson, Trinna Benson, Tyra Benson, Trevar Benson; one step grandchild, Sabrina Engelhardt; 18 great grandchildren, Michaela Benson, Carla Brislawn, Jason Benson, Zack Schroeder, MacKenzie Schroeder, Shelby Schroeder, Colton Schroeder, Branson Benson, Cole McCormick, Maddison McCormick, Bayley McCormick, Tanner McCormick, Brody Boehnke, Braden Boehnke, Courtney Vick, Zach Vick, Kamran Benson, August Witt; and one great great granddaughter, Madison Benson, and one brother, John Wacha, II, Lime Springs, IA.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harlan, who died November 21, 1992, a son, William Benson, who died in 2003, a sister, Loretta (Adolph) Ludwig, and a granddaughter, Debbie Benson.

Ione was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville.
