Pioneer gone - One by one the old settlers are passing away, and their familiar presence will be known no more. We are called on to record the death, on Wednesday, of a citizen of this township, John Bakewell, well and prominently known all over the county.
The deceased was born in England, came to America in 1844, and 29 years ago settled on the farm where he resided up to the day of his death, six miles North-west of Lansing.
During his life of nearly sixty years Mr. Bakewell was never ill until a week before Christmas, when he was taken sick. The precise cause of his death being a matter of some conjecture, a post mortem examination was held by Drs. Matoon and Brockhausen, who found that death was the result of "softening of the previously developed military tuberculosis of the right lung, and tubercial deposits in the liver."
In all his relations with his fellow-man Mr. Bakewell was considerate and straightforward. Politically he was an uncompromising Republican, and his vote and influence were cast in that direction.
He was gifted with unusual musical ability, and those who have heard him sing the familiar ballads of years gone by have enjoyed a rare and pleasing privilege.
He was an indulgent father, and an exemplary man, and will be missed in a large circle of true and devoted friends.
The deceased leaves a wife and seven children - six sons and one daughter. One son is at Iowa City, another near West Union, and both have been summoned to the funeral, which takes place this afternoon at two o'clock from the family residence.
