Died on Wednesday evening, March 16, at 6 o'clock P.M. after a short illness, at her residence in South Lansing, Mrs. Catharine Rohan, wife of Dennis Rohan.

The deceased was born in the parish of Rathdowney, Queens Co., Ireland. Her childhood days were spent among the green hills and smiling valleys of the Emerald Isle that she loved so well.

She died happy and reconciled, having had the blessings of the holy sacraments of the Catholic Church, which fortify all who die in the faith. She was a tender-hearted and charitable woman, and is deeply mourned by a host of friends and relatives at home and abroad.

She leaves a chasm in the hearts of her afflicted family of sons and daughters and devoted husband which can never be filled.

But over the dark, silent river,
That rolls by Eternity's shore,
Those children shall meet with their mother
To weep and to part never more.

The funeral of Mrs. Rohan was largely attended, last Friday. Services were held in the Catholic church, Rev. Father Urbany officiating.

~North Iowa Journal, Wednesday, April 2, 1879; pg 3

Note: I've been unable to positively ID her and to verify her surname. It is clearly given as ROHAN in the newspaper, but I'm not able to find anyone with that surname in the county. Ronan seems to be a better 'fit', but still unable to find her in census or other records. Gethsemane cemetery seems a likely burial place, but possibly as a reburial from the Old (defunct) Catholic cemetery. Please reply to this obit or contact the Allamakee coordinator if you can further ID Catherine.
