Miss Monica, daughter of James McCarthy of Union Prairie township, died at 2 a.m. Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Chicago, where she was a student nurse, from pneumonia, after an illness of less than forty-eight hours. The family here was at once notified by telephone and as they had no previous information of her illness it was a terrible shock to them.
The deceased was born at the family home northwest of Waukon 22 years ago and is survived by her father, four sisters and three brothers.
After finishing school at de Saelles Heights, Dubuque, she commenced the study of nursing at Mercy Hospital, Chicago, and would have graduated in June.
She was a lovely young girl, both in mind and person, and her untimely death brigs to our minds the words of the poet, "And we wept that one so lovely should have a life so brief."
The remains arrived here on Monday morning's train, accompanied by her sisters, Loretta and Nellie, who reside in Chicago, and were met at the depot by a large crowd of deeply sympathizing friends.
The funeral was held Tuesday, Requiem Mass at St. Patrick's church at 10 a.m. and burial beside her mother, who had gone before, in Mount Olivet cemetery.
