DIED - Patrick Short, one of the oldest inhabitants of Lansing, both in respect to age and residence; died yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock. He had been sick for a long time, and his death daily expected.
For over twenty years he had been a citizen of the place, and was well known to all the residents of this part of the county. His age was eighty five years.

-- --DIED - In this city, Thursday afternoon, Feb. 7th, 1878, Mr. Patrick short, of general prostration, aged about 85 years.
"Paddy," as he was familiarly called, was a typical son of the Emerald Isle. He was from Faranrorah, County Tipperary, and came from Dubuque to this city some eighteen years since. Shortly thereafter he installed himself landlord of "Erin Go Braugh," filling the position till his death, and making hosts of friends among his countrymen throughout the county, who always know that a hearty 'cead mile failte' awaited them at the hands of the kind-hearted and generous host.
For four months his almost iron constitution, taking his great age into consideration, has battled with the Destroyer, but gradually becoming weaker and weaker, and finally succumbing last Thursday at 3:45 P.M., when dissolution was like the going out of a candle that has burned to the socket.
His remains were taken on Saturday morning to their last resting place in the Lycurgus cemetery, whither a large concourse of friends followed, Dead Mass being first celebrated by Rev. Father Urbany at the Catholic church in this city, where the solemn ritual of the church for such occasions took place over the body.

Notes:
- The above deceased should not be confused with another man, Patrick Short/Shortt who resided in French Creek twp. in the 1860s & 70s, and died in 1879.
-1870 US census, City of Lansing: Pat Short, age 72, b. Ireland, Keeps tavern; Mary, age 50 [assumed wife] and R.J., age 19, b. Iowa
- In an article about the old-time merchants & hostleries printed in the Allamakee Journal & Lansing Mirror, 10/19/1932 was this phrase: "...the old stopping place owned and operated by Paddy Short, a block south of the Post Office. The old building is long since gone ... the sign nailed over the door and on it printed with a tarred stick was the legend, 'Erin go Braugh', P. Short, Proprietor."
- 'Cead mile failte' is Gaelic for "a hundred thousand welcomes." [Google translate]
- The 1885 Iowa State census enumerated Robert J. Short, living on E. Side Front Street, Lansing; probably in the same building his parents, Patrick & Mary, owned.
