DIED - Gen. Herman Roese, an old German gentleman who has long been a resident of Center township, in fact one of the early settlers of the county, died yesterday morning, of dropsey, with which he has for some years been afflicted.

Mr. Roese was 71 years of age and was a remarkable old gentleman who in his early life was intimately identified with the struggles of his native county which have made it historical to the world.

He was companionable, genial and warm hearted toward his friends, notwithstanding his mien was rather that of the austere and aristocratic old fashioned gentleman. He will be missed from among his old neighbors and friends among whom he has so long resided, and from the social circle in this city which his presence has so often graced.

He leaves a large and grown up family of children who are mostly comfortably situated and by whom he was greatly loved.

Death of General Herman Roese
The death of the venerable gentleman named above, though not unexpected because of protracted illness, brought sadness to a very large circle of friends, and to the community generally. He had been a resident of the county for twenty-three years, and of Center Township for about twenty-two years, removing to the farm upon which he resided to the day of his death shortly after his arrival in Iowa.

The deceased was born Oct. 6, 1806, in Germany, in 1848-9 became prominently connected with the Revolution in that country, subsequently fleeing to Switzerland and France, and finally finding a home in America.

The deceased was a man of fine physique, in personal appearance greatly resembling King William, his silvery locks, broad chest, and beard being similar to the monarch's. His voice was full and deep, and his manner austere and commanding.

The writer has been told by Governor Kirkwood that at no time during the progress of the late war were his patriotic feelings more moved than on an occasion when he was appointed to speak in Allamakee Co., and, on the way to Lansing, was met near the town by an escort of patriotic citizens, headed by the venerable General Roese. The striking personal figure of the old man, his imposing military manner, and the loyal welcome he gave the distinguished war Governor of Iowa made an impression upon his mind that he had never forgotten, and the circumstances wee repeated to us, by Gov. Kirkwood, on the occasion of his last visit to Lansing, when he inquired most particularly us to the well being of the old man.

The funeral ceremony took place on Thursday from the late residence of the deceased. The remains were taken to the family vault on the farm of Gen. Roese.

Eight of the ten children of the deceased are living, most of them residents of this county.
