Betty Smerud

Betty Mae Smerud, age 81, of New Albin, Iowa, died Thursday morning, September 15, 2005, at her home in New Albin. Funeral services were held Monday, September 19, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Albin with Fr. Daniel Knipper officiating. Burial was in the New Albin City Cemetery in New Albin. Thornburg Hanson Funeral Home of Lansing was in charge of arrangements.

Betty was born in New Albin January 14, 1924, to Gail and Florence (Lane) Gantenbein. She was a graduate of New Albin High School.

She married Edmund Smerud January 13, 1944, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Albin.

Over the years she had lived in Wyoming as well as New Albin. She held various nursing positions over the years. During retirement she enjoyed her family, flower gardening, the Chicago Cubs, and the Green Bay Packers.

She is survived by seven children, Alana (Pete) Fee of New Albin, Steve (Sue) Smerud of Shoshoni, Wyo., George (Evelyn) Smerud of Anchorage, Alaska, Carver (Linda) Smerud of New Albin, Eddie (Janice) Smerud of New Albin, Sally (John) Fink of New Albin, and Gus (Patty) Smerud of Brice Prairie, Wis.; 26 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and two twin siblings, Gary (MaryLou) Gantenbein and Gerigh (Alice) Gantenbein, both of Riverton, Wyo.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Edmund in 1998, her parents, and three brothers, Gordon, Gail, and Joe Gantenbein.
