Willard Leo Cunningham, 81, of Waukon, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon following a brief illness. Funeral services were conducted June 27 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Waukon, with Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet cemetery, Waukon.

Willard “Leo” Cunningham was born May 20, 1919, in Waukon, the son of Willard and Anna Marie (Healy) Cunningham. He attended Hanover #4 Grade School and graduated from Waukon High School in 1937. He also attended Loras College for two years. On April 24, 1945, he married Kathryn Lavon Regan at St. Patrick’s. Earlier in his life, Leo farmed on his own, then went to work for an implement dealer in the parts department.

Leo enjoyed his family and spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Leo is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Lavon; a son Bill; a granddaughter, Kristi Megan Cunningham; two brothers, Thomas and Earl; and a sister, Alice Cameron. Survivors include two sons, Joe (Mary), and Dan (Sharon); two daughters, Ann Fossum and Kay (Virgil) Johnson, all of Waukon; a daughter-in-law, Gloria Cunningham-Case of San Antonio, TX; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen and Dorothy Cunningham, both of Waukon, and Rita (Paul) Schuster, of Wheeling, IL.

Casketbearers were Ernest Cunningham, Fred Fossum, Bill Cunningham, Brian Cunningham, Kevin Cunningham, Jeremy Johnson, Patrick Cunningham, Colby Cunningham, Mike Cunningham, Justin Johnson, Lance Fossum and Tom Cunningham.

Martin Funeral Home of Waukon assisted the family.
