While happiness and good cheer held sway in most Lansing homes on Christmas day, in one of our oldest families death entered at about the noon hour, calling from earth the aged wife of Mr. G.W. Whitney. Her sufferings had been long and painful, dating back for nearly a year.

Deceased was always a kind and self-sacrificing woman. Wherever sickness and suffering existed, her services were always freely given, and many are the instances where her gentle nursing has had its good effect.

The maiden name of deceased was Dorotha Freeman. She was born in Vincennes, Ind., on the 13th of May, 1825. Her age was 70 years, 7 months and 12 days.

With her family she came to Lansing from Galena, Ill., on the 14th of July, 1862. She was well acquainted with the family of U.S. Grant in Galena, and on every occasion loved to tell of that distinguished man. She watched his career onward and upward with the greatest of interest. The writer has heard her recite many interesting anecdotes of Grants' early life in Galena.

Deceased was three times married, and leaves five living children. They are John Scott, Mrs. Mary Rogers, Mrs. Nellie Norris, Chicago, Mrs. J.J. Gerber, Minneapolis, and Grant, residing in California.

During the illness of Mrs. Whitney, the neighbors have been most devoted and kind, and her daughter, Mrs. Rogers, has been at her bedside for many weeks.

To the afflicted relatives and aged husband the MIRROR extends sincerest sympathy. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Presbyterian church.
