Decorah Woman was on Burned Steamer
By the burning of the Dubuque excursion steamer “J. S.” at a point near Victory, Wis., last Saturday afternoon four people lost their lives and many were injured or burned more or less. The steamer had been at LaCrosse with a big load of excursionists and was on its way home when fire broke out near the engine room. Mrs. Emma Randall of New Albin jumped overboard at the first alarm and was drowned, as was also one other woman who jumped. John Plano of Waukon and another who had been locked in the forward hold of the boat on account of drunkenness, were burned to death. Joseph Coyle of Lansing had both hands burned and sustained severe bruises on the body and Mrs. Dr. Meyer also of Lansing, had a leg broken. We understand that Mrs. Andrew Anderson of Decorah was on the boat, but was among the fortunate ones who escaped without serious injury. The boat was beached on an island where most of the passengers escaped by jumping into the shallow water and wading ashore. Later:--We understand Mrs. W. F. Knorr and son, and I. S. Kloster were also on the boat.________________________
