John Nise was born Aldorf,Wurttemburg,Germany on October 17,1859. His parents were Gottfried Nise and Catharine nee Shellhammer.Early in life he was bought into the fold of Christ`s Church by holy Baptism and later,after having been duly instructed in the Scriptures,was confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev.Goeller.

As a child he received the usual training in the secular schools of the land,as well as later in America at Luana, Iowa.

When he was about 20 years of age, Mr. Nise came to America with four of his sisters. Here, as a young man, he was employed in various communities of this state such as Luana,McGregor,Postville and in Cherokee county.The 17th day of January,1889 in Clayton County,marked an important event in his life,when he became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America

Another milestone of life was reached when on June 22, 1893, he was united in marriage with Caroline nee Krogman by Rev. J.Gass at Postville, Iowa.After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Nise settled north of Clermont,Iowa,where they lived and labored in the vocation of farming until 1914: where upon they moved to Howard County,Iowa and made their final home here on earth.God visibly blessed this union with five sons and two daughters of which all but two sons survive their father. These two sons died in infancy.Mrs. Nise also preceded her husband in death, having passed to her reward 16 years ago last March. Of Mr. Nise`s brother and five sisters,only one sister, Mrs. Mary Carlson of Marquette,Iowa,survives is not known whether a sister,who has been residing in Germany, is still among the living or not.

Many years back the deceased was afflicted with chronic rheumatism,which left him badly crippled and subject to frequent attacks of pains to this poor health, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs.Louise Hoopman for the past 13 years.As a loyal and faithful daughter,Mrs. Hoopman lovingly cared for her father in his declining years and did every thing possible to ameliorate and ease his pain.For the past 8 years he has been an invalid.A year ago this spring,Mr. Nise had a severe setback which threatened to extinguish his life,but he survived and for a time seemed much better. In April of this year, however, he became bedfast and on Friday Morning June 19,1942,God called his servant out of this vale of suffering to his eternal reward.

Mr. Nise had been a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. He was such even when his condition of health would not permit his attendance at church.He has been a member of this congregation since its inception and had often expressed the desire to be able to attend services and see the new church,but added that the only time that would become possible would be when they carry him in. He was always eagerly expecting and looking forward to the pastor`s visits and joined in the services conducted for him with a ready heart and mind. His was simple,straightforward,childlike faith in Christ as his Lord and Savior.

He leaves to mourn his departure his children, Mrs. Louise Hoopman,Mr. Carl Nise,Mr. John Nise,Mr.Wm.Nise and Mrs. Lenora Noblett,all of this community.Also six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews, one sister, Mrs. Mary Carlson of Marquette,Iowa,besides a host of acquaintances and friends/

The deceased attained an age of 82 years,8 months and 2 days.May he rest in peace!

Funeral services were conducted from the Larson Funeral Home and at St. Paul`s Lutheran Church on Monday,June 22,942 and interment was made at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at Lime Springs. His pastor,Rev. Paul C. Lutz, officiated, Mrs. H.Westby and Mrs.F.Lutz sang anthems"Rest Of The Weary", "The Lord My Shepherd Is" and "Let Me Go" during the service.

Pallbearers were T.G. Thomas,Herb Evans,Harry Walters,Ed Hanneman, John Sekora and H.C. Noblett.

The following relatives from a distance were at the funeral: Geo.Wagner and daughter Kate, Mrs. Monroe Hinkes,Mrs Ed Montour, Mrs. Wm Johannameer of Monona,Iowa,Christian Nise of Farmersburg,Iowa,Mrs. Mary Carlson,Mr.and Mrs. Vern Prouty, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Stegle and son Harold of Marquette,Iowa,Miss Ann Wegner,Mrs. Gust Miller and Mrs.Wm. Everman of Postville,Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Blumhagen and son Elmer,Mr. and Emil Schultz, Mr. and Mrs. Wm.King.Mrs.ED Preuss, Mrs.Walter Schultz,Mrs. John Schroeder and MrsWm.Schane all of Castalia,Iowa; Mr.and Mrs. Fred Schultz,Mr. and Mrs.Wm. Schultz,Carl Schultz,Louis Schultz,Harold Schultz,Mrs. Chas. Schutte of Luana, Iowa.
