DIED. At his residence, in Center township, on Wednesday, March 25, 1874, of dropsy of the heart, Thomas W. Smith, aged 80 years.
Thus hath been "gathered in" another old settler of Allamakee county, and one who was widely known and highly respected by all.
The deceased was born in Buffalo Valley, Pa., and removed to Stevenson Co., Ill., 27 years ago. He came to Allamakee county in 1855, where he has since resided, and has lived to see his large family of industrious, honest and upright boys grow up and take their places among our leading farmers and business men.
His life has been that of a true christian, and he died in the full belief of a blessed immortality, and if the pure and good are to receive their reward in the unknown hereafter, we are sure his will be great indeed.
Last fall the old gentleman paid us a visit and remarked during our conversation that he was quite sure it was the last time he would come to Lansing. He felt confident that his sands of life were about run out, and he calmly awaited the summons to cross the dark abyss of death.
The funeral took place last Friday, and his remains were followed to the tomb by a large concourse of sorrowing friends.
