Steven Hammel

Steven P. Hammel, 45, of Dorchester, Iowa, died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at his home in rural Dorchester. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 5 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Hanover Catholic Church, rural Waukon, Iowa, with Fr. Joseph Schneider and Rev. Msgr. Ed Lechtenberg officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Waukon where there will be a 4 p.m. scripture service.

Steven Paul Hammel was born October 27, 1959, in Waukon, the son of Ralph B. and Stella Celia (Collins) Hammel. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Dorchester Catholic Church, attended Dorchester Elementary School, and graduated from Waukon High School in 1978.

October 4, 1980, he married Deborah Jean Hess at St. Mary’s Lycurgus Catholic Church in rural Waukon. Steven started out working with his father, but since 1981 has been farming on his own in rural Dorchester. He operated a dairy herd, raising his own breeding stock, grew crops, and raised holstein steers.

Steven enjoyed hunting deer and coon, liked to go to tractor pulls, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He enjoyed staying busy fixing and maintaining things on the farm, and liked to decorate the yard with lights at Christmas time.

Survivors include his wife Deborah of Dorchester; five children, Jennifer, Steve Jr. (Mandy), and Julie Hammel, all of Waukon, and Lance and Daniel Hammel, both of Dorchester; a granddaughter, Cloee; his father, Ralph Hammel of rural Decorah; three sisters, Suzanne Iverson of La Crescent, Minn., and Mary Jo (Bill) Frana and Ruth Ann (Kevin) Kearney, both of Calmar, Iowa; and four brothers, Ralph Jr. (Kathleen) Hammel of Spring Grove, Minn., and Roger, David (Karla), and Charles (Deborah) Hammel, all of Dorchester.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Stella, and an infant sister, Mary Catherine.

Honorary casketbearers are all of Steven’s nieces and nephews. Casketbearers are Allen and Michael Iverson, Robert, Joe, Jimmy, and Matthew Hammel, and Billy Joe and Brian Brower.
