Mrs. FRANCIS L. (Rose Mary Smerud) INTLEKOFER 1917-2004

Rose Mary Intlekofer, 86, died Tuesday, February 3, 2004, at the San Juan Living Center in Montrose, Colo. She moved to Montrose two and a half years ago.

She was born August 24, 1917, and raised of the Iowa-Minnesota border near New Albin, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Clara Wilde Smerud. During her secondary school years she attended and graduated from Mt. Loretta School in Caledonia, Minn., and received an associate degree from Waukon Junior College in Waukon in 1937. In 1942 she became a licensed cosmetologist.

Rose Mary proudly served her country in World War II as a sergeant in the Women's Army Air Corps between 1943 and 1945. She remained until the time of her death a member of the American Legion. She married Francis L. Intlekofer in 1944 and was preceded in death by him in 1976.

She has resided with members of her family in the communities of Waukon, Tacoma, Fort Collins, Reno, Las Vegas, and most recently in Montrose. She was a homemaker and worked in retail sales. For recreation, she especially enjoyed reading, hiking, bowling, and golf.

Rose Mary was a symbol of strength and independence to her surviving children and their spouses: Kenneth (Fran) Intlekofer of Fort Collins, Colo., Donald Intlekofer of Las Vegas, Nev., Thomas Intlekofer of Loveland, Colo., Robert Intlekofer of Fort Collins, Colo., Richard (Sue) Intlekofer of Madison, Wis., Marilyn Intlekofer of Las Vegas, Joyce Intlekofer of Las Vegas, and Carol (Bill) Jackson of Montrose. Also surviving are brothers Donald Smerud of Waukon, Alfred Smerud of La Crosse, and John Smerud of New Albin; sisters Sarah Smerud of Tomah, Wis., Margretta Keenan of Waukon, and Evangeline McKenna of Clutier, Iowa. Rose Mary is also survived by nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, George and Edwin Smerud; and two sisters, Clara Louise Ball and Rita Carroll.

A memorial service was held Saturday, February 7 at Crippin Funeral Home, Montrose. Burial was in Iowa.
