Mrs. ERNEST (Bertha Kuhse) Fischer BRANDT 1875-1958
Mrs. Ernest Brandt, Bertha Kuhse, was born September 29, 1875, the daughter of Albert Kuhse and his wife, Wilamine Zell Kuhse, in Plummer, Germany. She was baptized in Plummer, Germany and came to this country with her family at the age of six years. She was confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Guttenberg by Rev. Basil.
She passed away at her home on April 5, 1958 at the age of 82 years, six months and seven days. She married August Fischer in 1898. There were two sons born to this union, Chris Fischer of Garnavillo, and Walter Fischer of San Fernando, California. August Fischer preceded her in death in 1902.
She married Ernest Brandt February 21, 1907. To this union were born one daughter, Mable, Mrs. Leon Topp of Lexington Park, Maryland; and five sons, Raymond of Clermont, Otto of Postville, Verni of Clermont, Clarence of Postville and Gilbert. Mrs. Brandt also raised three step-children, Elsie Meyer of Monroe, Washington, Will Fischer of South Dakota, and Mrs. Viola Harris of Hampton.
She lived on a farm southwest of Postville for 60 years, and moved to town in 1951, where she has lived since with her son, Otto. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, August Fischer, her second husband, Ernest Brandt, one son, Gilbert; six sisters, Mrs. Anna Hoffman of South Dakota, Mrs. Frieda Mecklenberg of Chester, Mrs. Gusta Bareis of Postville, Mrs Minnie Meyer of Castalia, two sisters who died in infancy, and one brother, who died in infancy.
She is survived by her daughter, Mable, six sons; Chris Fischer, Walter Fischer, Raymond Brandt, Otto Brandt, Verni Brandt, and Clarence Brandt; three step-children, Mrs. Elsie Meyer, Will Fischer and Mrs. Viola Harris; three brothers, Fred Kuhse of Postville, Rudolph Kuhse of Farmersburg, and William Kuhse of Postville, 12 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church of Postville on April 8, at 2:00, with the Rev. Charles E. Witt, pastor, officiating. Burial was in the Postville cemetery.
