Charles BURNHAM, one of the oldest residents of Franklin twp., died at his home near Hardin, on Thursday after a long and painful illness. His death has been expected for a long time, as his malady, dropsy, with other complications, was beyond the reach of medicine. Deceased was born near Woodstock, Champaign Co., Ohio, January 23rd, 1831, where he grew to manhood. He emigrated to Iowa in 1855 and located in Franklin twp on the farm where he died. He returned to Ohio in 1858 and was married to Elizabeth DEE, and in 1859 came back to Iowa to reside in the home that they had prepared. Four children were the fruits of this union. The following named survive him: Hilas C. BURNHAM and Mrs. Elma M. HINMAN. On May 24th, 1879 his wife died. On May 22nd, 1881, he was again married to Mrs. A.D. AMES, who still survives him. He has held a number of offices of trust in the township, having been elected assessor and collector of taxes for a number of terms and has held the office of justice of the peace for almost 18 years. The funeral services were held at the M.E. church at Hardin.
