THEODORE W. BURTON 1838-1868

At the residence of his father, Wm. Burton, Esq., on the Lansing Ridge, on the 24th inst., of consumption, Theodore W. Burton, in the 30th year of age.

The deceased was born in Cranston, RI, in the month of November, 1838, and emigrated with his father to Allamakee County in April, 1854. He occupied his time with his father on the farm and attending school until the fall of 1862, when he commenced to clerk for McFarland and Shaw. In the fall of 1865 he commenced business with D. D. Doe and J. H. Hale, under the firm name of D. D. Doe & Co. In April, 1867, he formed a partnership with J.H. Hale, since which time the business has been conducted under the name of Hale & Burton. He was of a quiet, unassuming nature, with high and noble ideas of right and wrong between man and man. His rule of action was that "as in human law obedience to its commands insured peace and happiness, so with the moral law a strict compliance with its demands, and doing to others as ye would that they should do unto you, would bring that peace and comfort which the world can neither give or take away." In the death of Mr. Burton the community has sustained the loss of an honest businessman, a person fully alive to all the progress and improvement of the day, an able financier; and would earnestly sympathize with his bereaved family in their affliction.
