WILLIAM H. CARITHERS 1829-1906

William H. Carithers died at his home in Post township, on Friday evening, December 7, 1906, aged 76 years, 11 months and 8 days. He was born in Ohio county, West Virginia, December 29, 1829.

In 1830 he moved with his parents to Vermillion county, Indiana, where he grew to manhood. In the fall of 1851 he came to Post township, Allamakee county, Iowa, where he has since lived with the exception of one year, during which he lived near Elkport, Iowa.

November 27, 1851, he was married to Elizabeth Smith, who preceded him to the beyond two years ago last March. To this union were born three children - Mrs. Jennie Marston, Mrs. Mary Waters and Mrs. Carrie Bachtell. These three daughters and their husbands, seven grandchildren, two brothers and a sister survive him.

Mr. Carithers was one of the earliest pioneers in the settlement of a new country, and realized to the fullest extent the hardships of pioneer life. While still young he came to this vicinity during its early settlement, and by hard work and patient industry founded a comfortable home, where friend and stranger were made equally welcome. Throughout his life truth, honesty and rigid uprightness has been the essence of his motto and guide. A kind and loving father, a good and helpful friend and neighbor has been called to rest.

The funeral was held from the home on Sunday afternoon, December 9th, at two o'clock, Rev. Van Nice of Waukon, officiating.

Interment was in the Reuben Smith Cemetery, near the late home.
